'They Were Soldiers' Meets Naughty Marietta

Editor's Note: This recording session Marvin J. Wolf describes was for the coming book They Were Soldiers, The Sacrifices and Contributions of Our Vietnam Veterans, written with co-author Joseph Galloway.  You can now view the book trailer created here.

Yesterday I rose at 5:00 o'dark and by 6:15 was on the road. Rendezvoused with co-author Galloway at a Costco gas station in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and after fueling drove through on-and-off showers and increasingly heavy traffic to naughty Marietta, GA, and our appointment with a recording studio hidden in a very expensive and beautiful home in an equally beautiful sub development in a pine forest. The studio was about the size of a generous closet, and was indeed built as the storage area for the maid's supplies and equipment. Her bedroom, slightly bigger, and a half bath, were adjacent. The former is now a clothes closet and the latter retains its function. Our mission was to each speak aloud our respective named contribution: Joe's Foreword and my Introduction. Total recording time, about 50 minutes. One take for each of us, a short break before and between, and off we went. I got home about 6:00 pm.

Very full day. This was our agent's idea, to personalize the HarperCollins audio book. The rest of the book will be recorded in New York, but HC also has favored studios in Nashville.

Turns out this tiny Marietta studio produces a dozen or more complete HC audio books a year, and there is plenty of recording talent in and near Atlanta. The homeowner/recording engineer remarked, however, that he rarely sees such "colorful characters" as Joe and me.
